A client of our firm was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle (Sec. 249 [1] of the Criminal Code). According to the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec, our client risked losing his driver’s licence for one year if he was found guilty. After a friend’s party, the accused decided to follow a vehicle very closely on the highway to scare them and to impress his friends, who were passengers in the vehicle.
During the trial, we negotiated with the Crown so that our client could plead guilty to a similar offence under the Criminal Code. The Crown accepted and our client could keep his driver’s licence; he instead had to pay a $500 fine within 8 months.
