A client of our firm was charged with uttering threats and intimidating a person associated with the justice system – in this case, a judge. After the trial, the court found him guilty on the threats charge, but acquitted him on the more serious charge, so he therefore avoided having to serve a long prison sentence. In this case, the defence successfully raised a reasonable doubt as to the required intent, which is on the one hand, wanting to cause fear, and on the other, aiming to undermine the administration of justice.
